6 friends share their best reads of this year

When I asked my friends to share the best books they read this year, it provoked a nice conversation. We rarely talk about the books we’re reading to one another and it is actually such an interesting topic, because I feel like I get to know my friends even better. I think their taste in books tells a great deal about their personalities or what they need from a book in that particular moment. Whether it is their sense of compassion, eagerness to learn more about society or their need to escape and wind down after a long day of work, all books tell a second story. If you need some book inspiration from a stranger to wind down during the holidays, here you go.

Women Don’t Owe You Pretty – Florence Given

Recommended by Zoë

“This book opened my eyes to things that seemed normal for such a long time. It made me realise that women have to endure so much more than men in our male dominated society.”

Weapons Of Math Destruction – Cathy O’Neil

Recommended by Morgane

“While we are aware of the inequality and injustices in our society, we are often oblivious to the ways Big Data maintains and contributes to this inequality. A great book about the impact of Big Data on our modern society and democracy for those who are new to the subject. Recommended for those who loved 21 Lessons For The 21st Century and Factfulness.”

Ishmael – Daniel Quinn

Recommended by Tosca

“This is a must read for everyone. They should add this book to every curriculum, especially in Western civilisations. This book shaped my perception of humanity and invites us all to rethink our way of living, in the least judgemental way. I truly believe that there would be peace on earth if everyone would read this.”

Recommended by Marianne

Food Farmacy – Lina Nertby Aurell and Mia Clase

“This book has given me such a good insight into how our bodies work. It has thought me how to boost my immunity, skin and overall health. Now that I know more about the effects and power of certain foods over our body, I’ve been more motivated to eat healthy rather than seeing it as a punishment.”

What Remains – Carole Radziwill

Recommended by Alexo

“This book tells the life story of Carole, about the ways she suffered throughout her life, lost her husband and her best friend in a short a period of time. I have always been interested in JFK Junior and Carolyn Bessette and this book gives interesting insights about their lives.”

Normal People – Sally Rooney

Recommended by Tosca

“This book is romantic and funny without pushing a general idea of what true romance should look like. The perfect novel for your staycation.”

When Life Gives You Lululemons – Lauren Weisberger

Recommended by Ellen

“What I need from a book is pure relaxation. This is a great feelgood book for a cosy night in the couch.”

Start With Why – Simon Sinek

Recommended by Tosca

“THE must read book for entrepreneurs. It has helped me focus on what matters in business and allows me not to get distracted by the noise. Filled with anecdotes about cool entrepreneurs and how they did it.”

10 Climate Actions That Work – Pieter Boussemaere

Recommended by Marianne

“It’s a nice informative book that has opened my eyes and helped me to understand the real problems and solutions to climate change. It has lowered the pressure I put on myself to make a change, because I’ve realised that the real solutions are out of my hands as an individual. It’s actually a pretty hopeful book showing us that the solutions are out there.”
